KAZI! Sokak Satıcıları Çankaya/Ankara Turkey 2011
Scratch is a temporary art project that was shown during the Cankaya Public Art manifestation: ‘Benimde kalbim var’, that was held from end of May till half June 2011.
With the work for Cankaya I created a platform for one specific group, the street sellers.
The project consists of two parts; both have a strong conceptual bond with each other.
A scratch lottery and a big size rub-off photo in public space (600 x 120 cm)
The first part is a scratch lottery, where the winner that has a lot with tree identical images of one street seller wins not only a picture of that street salesman, but more important, the picture will be handed out to the winner by the street seller himself giving the winner important additional information about his life and reasons why he does it.
As an artwork, the picture that was won will be explained to other viewers that see the pictures in a later stadium.
The owner / winner of the picture has to explain over and over again the backgrounds of the picture and becomes thereby the constant factor, an ambassador of telling the story of the illegal street sellers.
Scratching in a way has been ‘invented in Turkey’, during the econoclastic era people scratched faces of murals, as it was not allowed to ‘picture’ human beings, that priviledge belongs to God (allah) alone. The scratching is deeply integrated in the Turkisch Culture. Next to the scratching from historic point of view, there is a huge interest in (scratch)lottery’s.
I decided to combine these two aspects and give the historic twist.
The second part of the project is a stretch photo of almost all participating street sellers. They are printed on a layer of rub-off ink. By scratching away the faces, the text that the street sellers want to participate with the community becomes visible in a second layer.
This work refers to both the scratch lottery itself, and local history (the iconoclastic era). Instead of giving this scratching action a negative connotation, the scratching gets a positive touch, by freeing the texts of the street sellers. Finally, reading the texts, you reflect yourselve in the mirror that is behind the texts, you become part of the story..
“KAZI” projesi iki ögenin birleşmesinden oluşur; bunlardan ilki projenin zaten varolan kültürel fenomenleri ya da ana-akım gruplar tarafından kullanılan fenomenleri kullanarak çevreye kültürel ve tarihsel olarak verdiği referansların yerel olanla oryantasyonudur (ki proje yerel ortamla uyumlu olmak durumundadır). İkincisi benim kişisel olarak kendilerini ifade edebilecekleri bir platforma ihtiyacı olan insanlar için görünmeyen aktiviteler yapmak ya da onları görünür kılacak aktiviteler yapmak suretiyle bu insanların kullanacağı metodlar ya da stratejiler üretmek ve böylelikle ana-akım kültürün parçası olmak için sanatı bir platform olarak kullanmakla ilgileniyor olmamdır. Bu gruplar genellikle altkültürde, düşük ekonomik gelir seviyesinde ya da yasal olmayan veya yarı yasal icraatlar içerisindedirler. Bu gruplar için yaratmaya çalışacağım işle birlikte;
Proje birbirine kavramsal olarak sıkısıkıya bağlı iki parçadan oluşuyor. Birinci kısımda kazıkazanda birden çok sokak satıcısının başının birbirinin aynısı olan imajlarını bularak kazanan kişi sadece bu sokak satıcılarının resmini kazanmakla kalmıyor, daha önemlisi sokak satıcısı kazanana resmi bizzat verirken, bu işi yapma nedenleri ve yaşamı hakkında bilgi de veriyor.
Sanat eseri olarak kazanılan resim daha sonra resimleri sergileme esnasında görecek olan seyircilere açıklanacak. Resmin sahibi/kazanan tekrar ve tekrar izleyicilere resim hakında bilgi vermek zorunda kalacak böylelikle projedeki asıl öğe sokak satıcılarının hikayesinin tekrar tekrar, sürekli anlatılıyor olması olacaktır.
Proenin ikinci kısmı hemen hemen katılan bütün sokak satıcılarını içeren kazınmış, büyütülmüş bir resim olacaktır. Bu resimler kolayca çıkabilen bir mürekkeple basılaca
caktır. Yüzlerin kazınarak silinmesiyle, sokak satıcıları katılmak istedikleri topluluğun anlatısının bir parçası olarak ikinci katmanda görünür olacaklardır.
Bu çalışma bir yandan kazı-kazan oyununa gönderme yaparken diğer yandan da ikonoklasta gönderme yapmaktadır: Kazıma işlemine olumsuz bir çağrışım yüklemek yerine, burada kazımak sokak satıcılarının hikayelerini ortaya dökmek, özgürleştirmek anlamında pozitif bir dokunuştur.
